"A folky, rootsy feel permeates the record as a whole, the cohesion amongst the players extremely obvious"
Samuel J.Fell, Rhythms magazine
Walrus and the Carpenter is a heavy folk band based in Mullumbimby, NSW. The project is the vehicle for the unique song-writing and vocal talents of Matthew Engerer.
Born and raised on the island country of Malta, Engerer started writing songs at the age of 15. He left Malta in 2005 on a trip which saw him busking around the globe. During this time Engerer’s voice matured into the powerful, emotional force that has become the back bone of the Walrus and the Carpenter sound.
His travels eventually led him to the ‘Biggest Little Town in Australia’, Mullumbimby. Here Engerer assembled a band that quickly gained a reputation for their unique, transcendent live shows. After only a handful of gigs the band found themselves on the bill for Mullum Music Festival (2013,2014,2015) and Falls Festival, Byron Bay (2014).
The band soon found themselves holed up in the Music Farm recording studio, and under the guidance of engineer/producer Paul Pilsneniks (Angus & Julia Stone, Pete Murray) they recorded the 10 track album “Old Soul’s Eyes”. June 2015 saw the official release of “Old Soul's Eyes” through Vitamin Distribution. The album has since received airplay in Australia, Europe and the US.
After a short hiatus Engerer has re-emerged with a new look band and a number of new songs set to be released sporadically across 2018.
